What could be better than a Hawaii Wedding? This past October I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy some time on Maui and see one of my best friends get married and do my first Hawaii Wedding Makeup.
Shannon and I first met in Junior High School and to be honest we weren’t each other’s biggest fans. Not for any rational reason, but because we were both in love with the lead singer of Silverchair, Daniel Johns (who is still looking mighty fine today if I do say so myself). According to Junior High rules only one person is allowed to have a crush on a celebrity at a time so, naturally, we could not be friends! Shannon however was the bigger person and extended the olive branch my way inviting me to go to a Silverchair concert with her and that was the beginning of our friendship.
Shannon moved to SoCal for college and ended up making a life and career there for herself. In 2010 I also moved down to LA to take a job with the LA Opera working as their shopper for the costume shop. When I got there I reached out to Shannon and we reconnected – starting back up an awesome friendship!
When Shannon asked me to be in her wedding I was overjoyed. I had a feeling it might be in Hawaii, since it was one of her and Dave’s (her husband) favorite spots and when it became the official destination for the wedding I was thrilled.
I was also excited to get to do something fun and tropical feeling for her makeup. Shannon doesn’t wear a ton of makeup on a regular basis so she didn’t want to do anything too crazy for her wedding. She wanted the light and laid back style of Hawaii to be reflected in her look for the day – to me this meant doing really soft makeup in warmer golden tones and adding in a pop of color.
Here is what I used to get her ready for the big day:
- Urban Decay Naked Foundation
- MAC Bronzer Refined Golden
- NARS Orgasm Blush
- MAC Vanilla Pigment
- MAC Vanilla Pigment
- MAC Bamboo and Motif Eyeshadow
- MAC Hush Cream Color Base
- Makeup Forever Aqua Liner Color 14
- TARTE EmphasEYES™ Inner Rim Brightener
- Maybelline The Falsies Waterproof Mascara Black
- Ardell Lashes Sexies Black
- MAC Lipglass Impassioned
For a lightweight foundation that gives good coverage my go to is the Urban Decay Naked Foundation. The formula is very thin but with a buildable coverage so any problem areas I can just add a little bit more foundation until I get the amount of coverage I need. This foundation also stands up to the weather and I didn’t have to worry about it separating in the Hawaii sun. I used just a small amount of the foundation and gently worked it into the skin giving just the right amount of coverage needed and finished up with a dusting of invisible powder in the t-zone (forehead/nose/chin).
To keep with my warm tones I used refined golden bronzer (a warm terra cotta shade with gold shimmer) around the hairline, in the hollow of the cheek and a little bit across the nose. The bridesmaid dresses were a gorgeous coral so using a coral blush made perfect sense to me. I swept a little orgasm on the apples of the cheeks and finished her glowy sun kissed look with a light dusting of Vanilla Pigment along the cheek bones. This is, in my opinion on of the most versatile pigment with its undertones of golden peach it went perfectly with this look.
The eyes were really simple and fresh. I swept a little Vanilla Pigment under the brow bone, and then buffed Bamboo into the crease. I took Hush Creme Color Base and put it on the lid, then I packed one of my favorite colors, Motif (a golden peach with an opalescent shimmer) on top of it. I lined the lower waterline with a flesh toned liner to open up the eyes. To keep the look soft I used brown eyeliner instead of black. The description of Makeup Forever Aqua Liner says its black with a sparkle in it, but I think it goes on like a chocolate brown – this liner is waterproof, so no worries about those wedding day tears. I finished it up with a coat of Maybelline The Falsies Waterproof Mascara in Black and some very natural Ardell lashes.
The lips were where we got that great pop of color using Impassioned Lipglass – a gorgeous Coral. By using a gloss we got the color we wanted, but in a more sheer way. So, even though it was bright, it still had a more natural feel to it.
I had an amazing time in Maui and at the wedding, it was hard to come back home. I started planning my life as a wedding makeup artist in Hawaii so I would never have to leave.
Congrats Shannon and Dave here is to many happy years together!
